City of Fathers

Distinctive filmmaker Zdeněk Tyc brings a story of a father and son who share little more than the first name Richard and a panel apartment in Adamov. A burly, good-natured thirty-something from the factory listens to metal and lets his girlfriend into his life only partially. A subtle retired teacher who raised him alone after his mother's departure embodies gentleness and understanding. Their peacefully shared reality, where there is room for the hardcore band Našrot as well as Bergman's Whispers and Screams, is one day disrupted by the sudden death of the mother who lived nearby.

Ríša embarks on an idiosyncratic initiation journey lined with peculiar encounters and moments of unexpected insight. Tyc tackles existential themes headlong, supported by an excellently chosen cast led by Tomáš Vravník and Vladimír Javorský.
