How to Feed a Dictator?
A two-day festival "How to Feed a Dictator?" takes place on 17 and 18 October at the Synagogue on Palmovka, featuring five original theatrical productions inspired by the eponymous book by Polish reporter Witold Szabłowski.
A joint project of the Rekultur platform and the Krajinou přílivu association, the festival draws on testimonies from personal chefs of the 20th century's most brutal dictators. Five creative teams spent the year tracing the stories of cooks who served Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Enver Hoxha, Idi Amin, and Saddam Hussein, seeking their own theatrical form for these narratives. Individual productions developed gradually through work-in-progress evenings; now all five pieces come together over two festival days at the Synagogue on Palmovka, complemented by expert discussions.
The festival combines documentary theatre and site-specific performance, telling the stories of people who stood closest to dictators. What can be read from a dictator's plate? And what might be revealed by someone who cooks for him every day?
