Trio Saint Tropez (DE)
With violinist Julia Czerniawska, the group Subsystem explores the world of French jazz and swing - from Django Reinhardt to Boris Vian. The result is a surrealist collage: falsely Latin grooves interwoven with noisy improvisations and chamber miniatures, a multicultural blend between Paris, New York and Berlin. An unconventional crossover emerges - the band can sound like a string trio one moment, hold a groove like a funk band the next, then slip into free improvisation.
The project was created on commission for the Berlin concert series Zugabe! Django Reinhardt and French Jazz, sponsored by the Berlin Senate. After their first performance, all three musicians were so enthusiastic about the possibilities of this instrumentation and repertoire that it became their permanent ensemble, with which they have since explored the possibilities of this unusual trio.
