The Lighthouse
Director and screenwriter Robert Eggers, who caught the attention of both genre and art-house audiences with his debut The Witch, has crafted another intricately constructed work - a hypnotic claustrophobic drama with a distinctive directorial vision. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe play the keepers of the titular lighthouse in a story set at the end of the nineteenth century.
The coexistence of a hardened, heavy-drinking sailor and his inexperienced new assistant gradually descends into madness and paranoia, while the newcomer uncovers the mysterious circumstances surrounding his predecessor's fate.
Black-and-white cinematography and precise sound design create a ghostly and mesmerizing atmosphere that pulls viewers in alongside the characters. Eggers has crafted an aesthetically refined spectacle that merges beauty with savage brutality.
