III. Subscription Concert
The third subscription concert of the season opens with Modest Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" in the orchestration by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. This is one of the most celebrated works of 19th-century Russian programme music, depicting a witches' gathering on Midsummer's Night.
Following this comes Robert Schumann's "Concert Piece for Four French Horns and Orchestra" - a technically demanding composition requiring exceptional performers. The solo parts will be played by Zuzana Rzounková, Alois Stavárek, Jan Vobořil, and Jan Vobořil Jr.
The evening concludes with Richard Strauss's monumental symphonic poem "A Hero's Life" (Ein Heldenleben), often regarded as the pinnacle of his late Romantic output. The work is characterized by rich, grand orchestration - Strauss reinforced the brass sections (including eight French horns) and incorporated two harps.
