Samurai and Prisoner

A historical drama directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, based on the acclaimed novel by Honobuo Yonezawa. The story unfolds in Japan in 1578, during the turbulent Sengoku period of warring states, and centers on the tense relationship between two men - Murashige Araki, a samurai lord of a castle, and his captive Kanbei Kuroda, a brilliant and dangerous strategist and envoy of a rival clan, whom Araki imprisons rather than execute.

As the armies of Nobunaga Oda close in around the castle walls, a series of unexplained deaths plague the fortress, and fear and mistrust grow among its defenders. The unraveling of the mystery gradually transforms into a battle of wills, loyalty, and conflicting notions of honor, power, and freedom.
