Baba Zula

Multi-genre psychedelia from Istanbul, BaBa ZuLa, performs on Monday, October 10, 2026 at Palác Akropolis.

The group is associated with psychedelic rock, but its scope is broader - encompassing dub, reggae, and a fusion of Oriental influences with electronics, similar to the historically kindred Transglobal Underground. The ensemble combines Oriental lutes and percussion with electronics and seemingly primitive instruments like spoons or children's toys.

Their concerts feature theatrical elements - belly dancers, extravagant costumes, and sometimes paintings created live during the performance. BaBa ZuLa has recorded with numerous renowned artists, including Alexander Hackett, Fred Frith, and Dr. Das from Asian Dub Foundation, and has also contributed to several films - the most well-known being Crossing the Bridge - The Sounds of Istanbul by Turkish-German director Fatih Akin.
