What is Music in a Story? - Workshop

What role does music play in storytelling? Is it illustration, complement, decoration - or an essential part of the narrative? And if so, how do we translate it into a language we speak when we're not musicians? What is silence in spoken storytelling versus musical storytelling? What are rhythm and pulse? This workshop explores how music can co-create a story and where such music comes from.

We'll get our bodies moving - hands, feet, belly, and voice. We'll discover what musical things we can do together and what's better done alone. We'll search for sounds in stories and learn the basics of free improvisation for both musicians and non-musicians - working together and in small groups.

If you have an instrument that accompanies or could accompany your stories, bring it along - a whistle, rattle, board, stone, anything. You don't need anything; that's fine too. Also bring something to drink and something to sit or lie on the floor with.
