The Expulsion of Gerty Schnirch

HaDivadlo, Brno

"We have it settled, history has already processed it, so why return to it?"

A dramatization of Kateřina Tučková's acclaimed novel, this production traces the fate of Gerty Schnirch from a German-Czech family whose life was shattered by historical events. The staging specifically depicts the so-called "Brno death march" and raises questions about guilt, forgiveness, and understanding between Czechs and Germans.

The story unfolds events from the second half of the twentieth century through the eyes of a person who, due to political decisions, lost citizenship in the country where he was born, was forced to remain there, and died without forgiveness. The production contributes to public discourse on a theme still insufficiently reflected upon—the expulsion of Czech Germans.

The production won the Theatre Newspapers Award 2015 in the Drama Theatre category. Sara Venclovská was nominated for the Theatre Newspapers Award 2015 (acting performance).
