The Incredible Adventures of Sheldon and Mrs. Levine — Orpheus Theatre, Prague

Sheldon's wife left him; his mother abandoned her son. Mrs. Levine found a new husband; her son bought a parrot. One ended up in prison, the other became a television star. In a theatrical road movie across the United States to Tibet, Sheldon and Mrs. Levine experience adventures on the border between reality and illusion as they search for themselves.

The stories of Sheldon and Mrs. Levine are written as letters and diary entries. Through them, audiences comically discover how Mrs. Levine hurt her son - above all through a love that takes more than it gives. But relationships require two people: Sheldon cannot and will not lose his mother; he wants to win her back, to be loved and cared for. Until then, his mother serves as an excuse for all his life's failures. To be happy together again, they must first find their way to each other.

Despite the convenience of diary entries that could simply be read on stage, the authors chose to go beyond the script and transformed the letters into dialogue. Unread, living text carries the characters thousands of miles, brings them closer, and places them face to face with situations unfolding simultaneously in different places. The play's significance is heightened by this positioning of text on the border between reality and illusion, without losing its meaning.
