Curator's Tour and Shadow Theatre
GHMP House of Photography, Prague
The late 1990s - a time when dial-up internet was a luxury, films were shared on cassettes, music spread through homemade mixes, and humanity wondered if the world would end at the millennium.
During this period, when the Czech art scene was learning to function in a free society, the group Headless Rider emerged at the Academy of Fine Arts. Josef Bolf, Ján Mančuška, Jan Šerých and Tomáš Vaněk entered the visual art scene in a much more intimate way than today's. The exhibition offers a look into the history of Czech art and a reflection on what we have gained and lost over the past thirty years.
The curator's tour will be complemented by shadow theatre by Josef Bolf and Tomáš Vaněk. Their performance Particip No. 12, "Best of Shadows", was first presented together on the occasion of Petr Nikl's exhibition "Nests of Games" at the Rudolfinum Gallery in Prague in 2000 - using paper stencils they projected satirical shadow spots inspired by television, films and everyday reality. "Best of Shadows" later appeared at Gallery 761 in Ostrava, Display Gallery in Prague (2002) and Camden Art Centre in London (2004).
