Living Against All Odds
Kino Atlas, Prague
Housing affordability is a major issue of our time, affecting most severely those who participate least in public debate — low-income households, minority families, and single mothers.
The film follows a group of activists around Martin Freund, a city councillor and member of the "Live Brno" movement, as they attempt to convince the politicians of the Czech Republic's second-largest city to embrace a vision of housing accessible to all. They are met mostly with ridicule, rejection, and aggression. The filmmakers also give voice to people who hope that in a few days they might have a roof over their heads.
The film reveals the futile struggle against a dismissive system in which many politicians repeat phrases from alarmist chain emails and use them as arguments for their decisions.
