The film offers a sympathetic look at the 'confused generation' of the 1970s - their hopes, desires, and strained relationship with old-fashioned and hypocritical parents.

Larry and Lynn Tyne form a typical American family whose main concern is their daughter Jeannie: she takes drugs and moves in circles that worry her parents. When Jeannie leaves home, they meet other people in the same situation and gradually discover that a child's departure can also be liberating - suddenly they have space to rediscover themselves and each other.
