Kratom Collectors

Kino Atlas, Prague

A documentary film about kratom – the plant Mitragyna Speciosa – explores the world of green powder that was freely sold in the Czech Republic as a collectible item until 2025. The film follows the stories of people whose lives have been affected by kratom, both positively and with serious consequences, and raises the question: where is the line between a drug and a medicine?

The film examines the chemical nature of kratom, its cultivation and processing in Indonesia, and the risks associated with its use. It also explores its therapeutic potential and psychomodulatory effects, which make it both a substance with therapeutic promise and a dangerously addictive substance. Its availability in vending machines without age verification sparked a debate in Czech society about regulation, addiction, and the right to free choice.

Kratom Collectors is not just the story of one substance – it holds up a mirror to how society deals with freely available addictive substances, including those commonly tolerated, such as alcohol.
