A musician named Vašek visits the farm of Matúš after a long absence — a former colleague and member of one of the best cimbalom orchestras. Matúš learns from him that the orchestra he once played with is breaking up and will definitively end by month's end. This reminds him of an old tradition: if any orchestra member has a wedding in the family, the others play for free.
When his wife hears this, she decides to seize the last opportunity — she will arrange a wedding for her eldest daughter Jolana before the month ends. Her reason is simple: to get revenge on her long-time rival Božena, who had a grander wedding and never lets her forget it.
However, Jolana wants nothing to do with marriage. So her mother devises a plan, bringing Matúš in on the secret: without their daughter's knowledge, they will write a personal ad in the newspaper on her behalf. Matúš is to deliver it to the newspaper office — along with an ad selling their cow.
