It did not stop there. Among the godfathers of their records are names such as Bolek Polívka, David Koller, Roman Holý, Matěj Ruppert, and Stanislav Valášek. That neatly shows that the band was never purely an underground affair.

The stylistic turning point came at the start of the new millennium. In 2002 the sixth CD Merizo Nanen was released, ushering in a more psychotic, more accessible mode that the band has played in ever since. And their horizons were broader from the start than you might expect from a small Moravian band. They appeared on a number of samplers and tribute albums dedicated to names such as Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, and Smashing Pumpkins.

A sound that keeps changing its clothes

Dark Gamballe are neither a pure metal band nor a pop outfit, but something in between that has long been called crossover here. The core is guitars, electronics are layered on top, and above it all sit catchy, irony-laced choruses.

Their own manager described it best. "We call it crossover because it is a combination of melody, the sound of guitars, and electronics as the sprinkles on the cake," explains Jiří Křetinský, known as JayKay. Reviewers see it similarly: sonically the band has deepened its taste for a crossover electronic backdrop, which is married to the metal foundation of the songs represented by the considered guitar work. That combination is not an end in itself. It holds the songs together while also making them built for the stage. The album Perpetuum Gamballe was even written about as the most concert-ready hard rock recording of recent years.

Interesting is how they won over listeners outside the metal ghetto. Their music from the 2000s, especially the album Pochyby, is a self-assured fusion of hard pop and crossover with the typical Gamballe riffs. And above all: the band is not averse to singalong hits that tear down apparent certainties with biting irony, nor to darker ballads. It sounds like a contradiction, but that is exactly the trick. The music is hard, and yet you find yourself humming it on the way home.

That this is no mere genre curiosity is confirmed by the awards. Over the years Dark Gamballe have collected a number of accolades (genre Angels, Břitva awards, and others) and have played most club and festival stages. Their more recent output has a solid track record too. Several albums including Romance panenky a kladiva made it into the top three rock releases of the year in the Anděl poll, and the current record received the Album of the Year 2021 award at the Břitva Awards.

Moravian open-airs are their home

The chronology shows how the band changed. As Dark Gamballe they released in turn Robotory (2000), Merizo Nanen (2002), Superstar (2004), Bonboniera (2006), Perpetuum Gamballe (2008), Pochyby (2010), Zatím dobrý (2013), Panoptikaria (2015), Hluboký nádech (2018), and Romance panenky a kladiva (2021). The most recent release so far is the 2024 record. The album Dobrý lhář came out in 2024 on the label Magick Disk Musick and features the line-up of Desed (vocals), Spajsi, Deady, Tom, and Gothyšh. Anyone wanting a quick window into the "middle" era should start with Perpetuum Gamballe or Bonboniera, where the fusion of guitars and electronics is most mature. And that it all still holds together? All albums since 2002 have finished in the Top 3 of the hard rock critics' poll Břitva, with Merizo Nanen taking first place.

And then there is a detour for those who like silence as much as noise. The singer and lyricist Desed runs a more intimate project alongside Dark Gamballe. Aplaus pro dva is a duo consisting of guitarist Jun with Ukrainian-American roots and singer and lyricist Desed, who currently plays with Dark Gamballe and Trny & Žiletky. It is dark indie folk built on a deep baritone guitar and charismatic vocals. Their second record came out last year. The album Rubikova cibule is the second recording by the original duo, which in the second, mirror-image half of the record was supported by sound engineer A2V.
