About

William Holden (1918-1981), born William Franklin Beedle Jr., was an American actor whose career stretched across more than four decades. He became one of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws in the 1950s, defined by roles as cynical yet ultimately heroic men - most memorably in Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Stalag 17 (1953), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The American Film Institute ranked him 25th on its list of the greatest male stars of Classical Hollywood cinema.
