Valerie Kaplanová (1917-1999) was a Czech stage and film actress who found wider fame only in her later years. Her gaunt frame, deeply lined face and rasping voice made her a natural fit for roles as old women and grandmothers. In Jára Cimrman ležící, spící she played the enigmatic museum guide who turns out to be Cimrman himself. She is also remembered for the fairy tale Honza málem králem and Troška's Slunce, seno… comedies, and TV audiences knew her as "Bába Tutovka" from a popular lottery show.
