Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850–1937) was a Czechoslovak statesman, philosopher, and sociologist born in Hodonín, Moravia. A professor at Charles University and member of the Austrian parliament, he led the independence movement abroad during World War I. In 1918 he became the founding first president of Czechoslovakia, earning the title "President Liberator."
