Rouiched, born Ahmed Ayad (April 28, 1921 - January 28, 1999), was an Algerian comedy actor, playwright and singer of Kabyle origin, born in Algiers. He became a national icon through the title role in Hassan Terro (1968), directed by Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina, and the wider Hassan film trilogy that followed. A self-taught performer, he joined the Algerian National Theatre in 1963 and wrote the original stage play on which the film was based. During the war of independence he was imprisoned for anti-colonial activism, an experience that shaped much of his later work.
The Algerian Public Library in Algiers held a memorial event in January 2026 on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Rouiched's death with the participation of artists and researchers.
The Algerian press recalled Rouiched's work on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of his death and emphasized his contribution to Algerian theater, film and television.
The Algerian Cinémathèque paid tribute to Rouiched with a special screening of his films Hassan Taxi, Hassan Niya and others.
