Robbie Coltrane (born Anthony Robert McMillan, 1950-2022) was a Scottish actor whose career spanned British alternative comedy in the 1980s through to major international film franchises. He earned worldwide recognition playing Rubeus Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films (2001-2011) - a role J. K. Rowling personally chose him for. British audiences already knew him well as criminal psychologist Fitz in Cracker, which brought him three consecutive BAFTA Best Actor awards (1994-1996). He was appointed OBE in 2006 for services to drama.
BBC Scotland broadcast on 26 December 2022 an hour-long documentary tribute Robbie Coltrane at the BBC, in which Celia Imrie guides viewers through archival recordings of the actor's career.
Robbie Coltrane died on 14 October 2022 at the age of 72 in a hospital in Scottish Larbert; the cause of death was complications associated with osteoarthritis.
At the beginning of 2022, Coltrane participated in the HBO Max special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, where he made his final public return to his role as Hagrid.
