About

Richard Thomas Griffiths OBE (31 July 1947 - 28 March 2013) was an English actor whose career spanned four decades across film, television and stage. He is best remembered as the blustering Vernon Dursley in five of the Harry Potter films and as the memorably eccentric Uncle Monty in Withnail and I (1987). His stage work brought him the greatest honours: playing Hector in Alan Bennett's The History Boys earned him a Tony Award, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award.
