Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough (29 August 1923 - 24 August 2014) was an English actor, film director and producer whose career on both sides of the camera spanned more than six decades. As an actor he is best remembered for The Great Escape (1963) and Jurassic Park (1993); as a director he won two Academy Awards for the epic biographical film Gandhi (1982), which took eight Oscars in total. He served as president of both RADA and BAFTA, and was knighted in 1976 for services to British film.
BAFTA published extensive archival material on its website dedicated to Attenborough's legacy, including memories from academy members.
The magazine IndieWire published a review of the new 4K UHD edition of Gandhi and recalled Attenborough's contribution to epic cinema.
The charitable committee Arts for India honored Attenborough in memoriam at an event held at BAFTA headquarters.
Richard Attenborough died on 24 August 2014 at the age of 90; Prime Minister David Cameron called him one of the giants of world cinema.
Pinewood Studios named a new sound stage of 2,800 m² after Attenborough; the official opening took place on 23 April 2012.
