Penélope Cruz (born 28 April 1974 in Alcobendas, Madrid) is a Spanish actress with a career spanning more than three decades across European and Hollywood cinema. She became the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award - Best Supporting Actress for Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) - and has received four Oscar nominations in total. Her long creative partnership with director Pedro Almodóvar has produced seven films, among them Volver (2006) and Parallel Mothers (2021).
The film La bola negra (The Black Ball), in which Cruz plays a cabaret singer, premiered at the Cannes festival in 2026 and received a 16-minute standing ovation; Netflix bought the rights for the USA.
Cruz revealed at a press conference in Cannes that during the filming of La bola negra, doctors diagnosed her with a possible brain aneurysm; she completed the scenes after medical approval.
Cruz joined the star-studded cast of Nancy Meyers' new comedy for Warner Bros. alongside Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackey, and Owen Wilson; the film is set to release on Christmas 2027.
