Paul Winfield (1939-2004) was an American film and television actor best known for his Oscar-nominated performance as a Louisiana sharecropper in Sounder (1972), which made him only the third African American nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Over four decades he played a remarkable range of roles - Martin Luther King Jr. in the miniseries King (1978), a Starfleet captain in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and detective Traxler in The Terminator (1984). He won an Emmy Award in 1995 for a guest role on Picket Fences.
