Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774) was an Irish writer, poet, and playwright. His comedy She Stoops to Conquer (1773) is a classic of English theatre, built on mistaken identities and social comedy, and remains widely performed today. He also wrote the novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), one of the most celebrated works of 18th-century English prose.
