About

Nils Poppe (31 May 1908 - 28 June 2000) was a Swedish actor, comedian, director and theatre manager who became the leading film comedian in Sweden during the 1940s. He is internationally best known for playing the jester Jof in Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957) - a casting choice that surprised many but revealed a dramatic depth beyond his comic persona. From 1966 he ran the open-air Fredriksdalsteatern in Helsingborg, whose productions were broadcast nationally on Swedish television, and he continued performing on stage until the age of 85.
