Munly & the Lupercalians is a project led by Denver songwriter Jay Munly, a key figure in the city's underground scene and a long-standing member of Slim Cessna's Auto Club. Their music weaves folk, dark country, gothic gospel and punk into bleak narrative songs set in Munly's invented world of Lupercalia. Two albums exist so far: the debut Petr & the Wulf (2010, Alternative Tentacles) - a loose gothic retelling of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf - and Kinnery of Lupercalia: Undelivered Legion (2022, SCACUNINCORPORATED), the first part of a planned trilogy. Munly is also a published playwright who has received the Southern Heritage Award and the Young North American Playwright Award.
Munly & the Lupercalians performed at the Fire in the Mountains festival (Cut Bank, Montana) in July 2025.
As part of the Kinnery of Lupercalia trilogy, Slim Cessna's Auto Club released the second album Buell Legion in May 2024, following Munly's 2022 album.
The album Kinnery of Lupercalia: Undelivered Legion was released on August 26, 2022 on the SCACUNINCORPORATED label and was supported by a European tour in October 2022.
The October 2022 European tour took the band to Madrid, Budapest, Zagreb, Warsaw, Prague, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Zurich, and other cities.
