Christmas Concert: Czech Carols and French Horn Solos
A festive concert featuring Czech Christmas carols and French horn concertos performed by the Moravian Theatre Orchestra and soloists.
The Moravian Theatre Orchestra (MDO) is the resident symphony orchestra of Moravian Theatre Olomouc, which has operated continuously since 1920 and is the only theatre in central and eastern Moravia with three artistic ensembles and its own orchestra. The ensemble underpins all opera, operetta, musical and ballet productions of the theatre, and also performs standalone concerts. Since January 2025, the theatre has been part of a merged municipal organisation together with the Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc, while both institutions retain their separate artistic identities.
The MDO Orchestra accompanied the premiere of the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev (March 13, 2026) - the first Olomouc performance of this work in thirteen years, prepared for the 90th anniversary of the score's creation.
The MDO Orchestra opened the 2025/2026 season with a gala concert under the baton of the new head of opera and operetta Jiří Přibyl; the season brings a total of eleven premieres including the opera Tosca, the musical Evita, and a ballet to music by Stravinsky.
As of January 1, 2025, the Moravian Theatre Olomouc merged with the Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc into one legal entity; the MDO Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra maintain their independent artistic identity.
For the 2025/2026 season, Jiří Přibyl took the position of head of opera and operetta; the opera dramaturgy opens with Puccini's Tosca, and a major production with the ballet company will be Mozart's Don Giovanni.
