Hadj Smaine Mohamed Seghir (29 October 1932, Constantine - 6 September 2021, Los Angeles) was an Algerian actor, theatre director and pedagogue whose career spanned nearly seven decades. He trained in Paris as a stage aide to Jean Vilar, then co-founded the Algerian National Theatre and the National School of Dramatic Arts after independence. His best-known film roles came in The Battle of Algiers (1966) and Chronicle of the Years of Fire (1975, Palme d'Or, Cannes). From 1978 to 1994 he ran the Regional Theatre of Constantine.
Hadj Smaine Mohamed Seghir died on September 6, 2021 in Los Angeles at the age of 89, where he was on a family visit to his son, director Anouar Hadj Smaïn.
The Algerian cultural public designated him as one of the founders of the National Theatre of Algeria and a pioneer of professional theatre in the country.
