Michael J. Fox (born June 9, 1961, in Edmonton, Canada) is a Canadian-American actor best known for playing Alex P. Keaton in the NBC sitcom Family Ties and Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985-1990). Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at age 29 in 1991, he founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000, which has grown into the world's largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's research, having directed more than $2 billion to scientists. He has largely stepped back from acting and focuses on advocacy and fundraising for a cure.
