Martin Sheen (born Ramón Estévez, August 3, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio) is an American actor whose career spans more than six decades of film and television. He earned worldwide recognition as Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now (1979) and as President Josiah Bartlet in The West Wing (1999-2006), a role that won him a Golden Globe and two SAG Awards. Off screen, he has long been active in political and humanitarian causes.
