Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) was an American actress, singer and model who became one of the most enduring icons of 20th-century popular culture. Raised in foster homes in Los Angeles, she broke into the film industry via modelling and signed her first studio contract with 20th Century Fox in 1946. Over a decade at the top, her films grossed more than $200 million, and her role as Sugar Kane in Some Like It Hot (1959) earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy.
