Lea Katherine Thompson (born May 31, 1961) is an American actress, singer, dancer, and director best known for playing Lorraine Baines-McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985-1990). She began her career as a ballet dancer before pivoting to film, where she became a defining face of 1980s Hollywood through roles in Red Dawn, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Howard the Duck. On television she led the NBC sitcom Caroline in the City (1995-1999) and the ABC Family drama Switched at Birth (2011-2017), and she has remained active into the 2020s with the Hallmark series The Chicken Sisters (2024) and a stage appearance in the musical comedy Three Months Later (Los Angeles, February 2026).
Thompson appeared in the musical comedy Three Months Later alongside Kristen Bell at Jim Henson Studios in Los Angeles (February 19-21, 2026).
Thompson announced on Instagram that she became a grandmother - her first granddaughter Robbie June Carlisle was born in February 2025.
The second season of the Hallmark series The Chicken Sisters, in which Thompson plays Nancy Hillierową, began airing in August 2025.
