Laurence Kerr Olivier (22 May 1907 - 11 July 1989) was an English actor, director and producer widely regarded as one of the greatest English-speaking actors of the 20th century. His film Hamlet (1948) was the first non-American production to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, with Olivier also taking the Best Actor prize. From 1963 to 1973 he served as the founding director of the National Theatre in London, nurturing a generation of British stage talent. His honours included a knighthood, the Order of Merit, and a life peerage as Baron Olivier of Brighton - the first actor ever elevated to the British peerage.
On the occasion of the centenary of Olivier's birth, a statue of him was unveiled in front of the National Theatre in London, and the British Film Institute organized a retrospective of his work.
The London Society of West End Theatre renamed its theatre awards to Olivier Awards in honour of Laurence Olivier.
Queen Elizabeth II awarded Olivier the Order of Merit.
The American Film Academy awarded Olivier an honorary Oscar for his lifetime contribution to cinema.
