Larks on a String is a 1969 Czech film directed by Jiří Menzel, based on short stories by Bohumil Hrabal. Set in a scrapyard in the early 1950s, it follows a group of people sentenced to re-education through labour. The communist authorities banned it immediately after completion, and it only reached cinemas in 1990 - when it won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
