Krzysztof Penderecki (1933–2020) was a Polish composer and conductor, one of the most significant figures in 20th-century classical music. He gained international recognition for his avant-garde sonoristic works, such as Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, and later embraced a neoromantic style in works like the Polish Requiem.
