Juraj Herz was a Czech-Slovak film director known for his dark, grotesque style. His most celebrated work, Spalovač mrtvol (The Cremator, 1969), based on Ladislav Fuks's novel, is a landmark of Czech cinema - banned after the Soviet invasion and not publicly screened until after 1989.
