Josef Mengele (1911–1979) was a German SS physician who conducted brutal pseudoscientific experiments on prisoners at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during World War II. Known as the "Angel of Death" for his role in selecting prisoners for the gas chambers, he fled to South America after the war and evaded justice until his death in Brazil.
