Josef Abrhám (14 December 1939 - 16 May 2022) was one of the most celebrated Czech actors of the second half of the 20th century. He became a household name through comedies such as Marečku, podejte mi pero! and Vrchní, prchni!, and as Dr. Blažej in the television series Nemocnice na kraji města - a role that also won him fans in Germany. He received the Czech Lion Award for his performance in Šakalí léta (1993) and the Thalia Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2020. He was married to actress Libuše Šafránková, with whom he formed the most iconic acting couple in Czech cultural life.
The remains of Josef Abrhám were buried in October 2023 by his son Josef Abrhám Jr. in the family crypt in Kunovice.
Josef Abrhám died on May 16, 2022, at the age of 82 in a hospital in Mělník from pneumonia.
In 2020, Josef Abrhám received the Thalia Prize for his lifetime contribution to Czech theatre.
In January 2019, Josef Abrhám was decorated by Slovak President Andrej Kiska with the Order of the White Double Cross.
