Jonathan Demme was an American film director best known for The Silence of the Lambs (1991), starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. The film swept five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Demme also directed the drama Philadelphia (1993) and several acclaimed music documentaries.
