John Turturro (born 1957, Brooklyn) is an American actor, director and screenwriter of Italian descent whose career spans more than four decades. He became a go-to collaborator for Spike Lee and the Coen Brothers, winning the Cannes Best Actor prize for Barton Fink (1991). On television he has earned Emmy nominations for both Severance (Apple TV+) and The Night Of (HBO), and won an Emmy for a guest role on Monk (2004).
Turturro appeared in the thriller The Only Living Pickpocket in New York (directed by Noah Segan), which had its world premiere at the Sundance 2026 festival and will be released to cinemas by Sony Pictures Classics in autumn 2026.
Turturro returned behind the camera as director of a documentary about baseball manager Joe Torre, which is currently in production.
The film The Cut (directed by Sean Ellis) was released in American cinemas, in which Turturro played ruthless coach Boze alongside Orlando Bloom and Caitríona Balfe.
The Museum of the Moving Image in New York awarded Turturro the Spring Moving Image Award for lifetime contribution to cinema art.
The second season of the series Severance premiered on Apple TV+, in which Turturro reprises the role of Irving Bailiff; the series was soon renewed for a third season.
