Joe Turkel (July 15, 1927 - June 27, 2022) was an American character actor from Brooklyn who worked steadily in Hollywood from the late 1940s through the 1990s. He is one of only two actors to have appeared in three Stanley Kubrick films - The Killing (1956), Paths of Glory (1957), and The Shining (1980), where he played the ghostly bartender Lloyd. He is equally remembered as Dr. Eldon Tyrell, the replicant creator, in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982).
Kubrick's film Paths of Glory (1957), in which Turkel played soldier Arnauld, was released in August 2022 in a new 4K UHD edition from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
Joe Turkel died on June 27, 2022, at the age of 94 from liver failure at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
The Turkel family announced the posthumous publication of his memoirs titled The Misery of Success, which the actor completed shortly before his death.
