Jean Merilyn Simmons, OBE (31 January 1929 - 22 January 2010) was a British actress who rose to prominence in postwar British cinema as one of J. Arthur Rank's contract players before building a major Hollywood career from 1950 onward. She appeared alongside Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando, Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster, earning two Academy Award nominations - for Hamlet (1948) and The Happy Ending (1969) - as well as a Golden Globe for Guys and Dolls (1955) and an Emmy for The Thorn Birds (1983).
