Ivan Balada is a Czech film director. His feature debut Archa bláznů (Ship of Fools, 1990) was based on Chekhov's story Ward No. 6, but was shot before the onset of normalisation and could only be completed twenty years later. The communist regime severely restricted his filmmaking career in the intervening decades.
