Heiner Carow (1929–1997) was a German film director from the GDR, closely associated with the DEFA studio. He gained wide recognition with The Legend of Paul and Paula (1973), scripted by Ulrich Plenzdorf, which became one of the most beloved East German films. He later directed Coming Out (1989), the first East German film to address gay themes.
