Günter Grass (1927–2015) was a German novelist, poet, and visual artist. His debut novel The Tin Drum (1959), the first part of the so-called Danzig Trilogy, brought him worldwide recognition and earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999. His work is marked by grotesque humour, political engagement, and a critical examination of 20th-century German history.
