Gunnar Björnstrand (1909-1986) was a Stockholm-born Swedish actor whose name is inseparable from the cinema of Ingmar Bergman - he appeared in 23 Bergman films, more than any other performer. Across a career spanning roughly 180 films, he moved with equal ease between comedy and harrowing drama, leaving his most lasting mark in roles such as the sardonic squire in The Seventh Seal (1957) and the spiritually hollow priest in Winter Light (1963).
