Sunset Boulevard
Billy Wilder's legendary film about the downfall of a silent-film Hollywood star. A dark satire on the myths and illusions of classical Hollywood, starring Gloria Swanson.
Gloria Swanson (1899-1983) was an American actress who became one of Hollywood's highest-paid stars of the silent era and a defining fashion icon of the 1920s. Trained under Cecil B. DeMille at Paramount, she later formed her own production company and earned a nomination at the very first Academy Awards for Sadie Thompson (1928). After years away from the screen, she made a celebrated return as Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950) - a performance ranked among cinema's greatest and her third Oscar nomination.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the premiere of Sunset Boulevard, extensive retrospectives were released, reminding that the film still occupies leading positions in the rankings of the greatest films of all time.
Swanson published an autobiography Swanson on Swanson, for which she reportedly received a fee of one million dollars.
