Gerard Dou was a 17th-century Dutch painter and pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn. He became famous for his small, meticulously detailed genre scenes and portraits, often set in window niches. He founded the Leiden school of fine painters (fijnschilders) and was among the highest-paid artists in the Dutch Republic during his lifetime.
